Thing 23 - Completed

I have completed the evaluation & the 23 Things. It's been fun & fustrating. It is a great learning experience. I want to review it in the coming months (can days be expanded to 36 hours?-humor).

Thing 22 - Completed

I resolve to maintain my blog, afterall, Bronwyn has been left in the lurch while I learn how to do things. I really want to know what happens to Bronwyn...

I give myself the gift of 15 miuntes a workday to review the 23 things & find new things. However, my supervisor...

I added LibraryBytes and Shifted Librarian to my reader. I hope to check it regularly.

When I hear the comp guys or a patron use a new term, I simply google it & then investigate further. Not too efficient, but it quickly places the term in my mind.

Thing 21 - Completed

I joined the 23 Things On a Stick Ning. I left comments for the Ramsey County group. I uploaded a fake picture for the Ramsey people. I also added the Ning badge to my blog. I joined the GoodReads social network. This should be interesting to see how this develops & what kinds of recommendations I'll receive. It is fun exploring the various social networks online.

Thing 20 - Completed

I joined the Librarians and Facebook group in Facebook. I wanted to find out how librarians were using Facebook. My account is under a fictitious name, Rose Booker. I would have to use Facebook for a few months before I could define what makes it popular. It seems to be relatively easy to use. It's organization is quite good.

I visited MySpace but did not set-up an account. Just for fun, I searched on "library". There were 1,950,000 hits. Both Denver & Hennepin Facebook have set up a teen "cyberareas". The libraries add online database titles, booklists, programs, etc., while allowing the teens to socialize with each other. Marketing, marketing, marketing.

Thing 19 - Completed.

I listened to two podcasts from MPR, ElectionWise & Grammer Grater. I linked ElectionWise to my blog. I found the podcastalley.com the most convenient to use because you can either enter a keyword or browse by topics. Well, I can't carry a tune so I don't think I will try any singing podcasts. I do like the concept of phoning in your podcast with Gcast.

Thing 18 - Completed, with glee!!!

I love YouTube. I'm going to search for more library cat videos, on my lunch hour of course...

I searched "library" and came up with some very intriguing videos about library programs. However, there are some ordinary library videos that did not capture my attention. Grab their attention, produce quality, and "embed" your message! [humor]

YouTube could be used to introduce new library programs, highlight services, and just show the library as a "happening" place.

Thing 17 - Completed

I was not able to create a RSS feed using Google Reader. I did use the revised MINITEX directions, no success. Quite frankly, if this activity is this complicated, I strongly doubt patrons will use it.

I did use "Page Composer" to create a web page from Academic Search Premier. This was ok. I feel there are other collaborative web tools out there that are better & easier to use.

I did have the smoothiest success with the ProQuest Newsstand ... web page. Perhaps it felt easier because it was "struggle" number 3.

The NetLibrary activity does promote effective and "full" usage of the features of reading an eBook. Good exercise.

Thing 16 - Completed

This thing could be really handy for my own projects. I like the 5 steps in the RPC, and also the ability to have email reminders. The teacher's part will definitely help librarians help students.

I waited & waited for Puzzle Pirates to load. Finally, I quit. I really wanted to become a gamer!!! Perhaps I will try after school starts when the kids are gone.

I would like to use LibraryThing to "catalog" my CDs. It would be really cool! I had trouble adding the LibraryThing widget to my blog. Does anyone have simple directions that work??? I added five books to my library. One of the books was also in 51 members' libraries. Imagine! ...and it's a book of cliches!

Failed to get the Countdown exported to my blog. Help???? I liked Backpack because it combines tools, calendar, reminders, etc. I would like my own homepage. I would be able to include the items I find interesting. I tried Backpack. Very good. Its combination of features would be beneficial to the busy person.

Reading these social sites will alert you to the "hottest" topic of the day. These tools seem to be a productivity detractor. I have not used these tools before doing this Thing. If one is able to narrowly define your interests, then these could be most useful. If one has to read through the entire contents...well.

Ugh, signing up for another account! What's the secret for enlarging that 8 minute podcast tutorial??? I created a Del.icio.us account & placed one bookmark in it. I can visualize using this for tutorials or booklists.

Thing 10-Wikis-Completed

Wikis seem really great for collaborative work. I just noticed in WorldCat that bib entries are inviting comments/reviews/etc. Must be a wiki at work. Explain to me how the integrity of the catalog record is protected while adding a wiki to invite the public to comment...curious as a kitten...

Catching up with Bronwyn

We last left Bronwyn crossing over the Hwy 36 viaduct on a cold winter's night. She had met a rabbit named Bounder along the roadway. He and his fellow rabbits were guiding Bronwyn to a warm, friendly place with food.

They stopped in the parking lot of a large brick building with red trim. Bounder led them to a side garage door and said, "This is where you can get inside. You just need to watch the delivery guy and sneak in behind him. He ususally has a huge pile of grey boxes to delivery. Follow him to the elevator, hide among the boxes, and get off downstairs. From there, go down the hall & into the lunch room. There are ususally tons of crumbs on the floor. Sometimes the humans leave out pizza. Also, upstairs is a coffee shop. It is quite easy to remove the wrappers from the sandwiches."

Thing 9 is completed. I used Google docs. Did not want to bother signing up for another account in Zoho Writer. Very helpful idea for document sharing.

Thing 8 completed.

This Thing could be very useful for creating visual presentations. I was discouraged by the lack of directions & amount of time needed to complete this Thing.
